DID YOU KNOW — white vinegar can legally be made with petroleum based ingredients. If the bottle does not say “made from grains” then be very wary of using it.
According to the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Division, Internal Revenue Service says: “Presently, we authorize the manufacture of vinegar from ethyl alcohol synthesized from natural gas or petroleum derivatives.
The policy states that synthetic ethyl alcohol may be used as a food ingredient or in the manufacturing of vinegar or other chemicals for food use, within limitations imposed by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Alcohol Administration Act, and regulations promulgated under these acts.

An easy concept I apply to several areas of my life, not just label reading comes from a saying I learned from a law professor in college. His motto, “the bold print selleth and the fine print taketh away”. That motto is a constant reminder not to be duped by the fancy wording that makes me feel good. Since I am a “glass half full” girl, I will never leave you with just the dark side of vinegar, so let me share with the lighter side.
